
Peer Counselor Training Program Descriptions:
Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Program (PSMHC) -
STATE CERTIFIED ENTRY COURSE
Approved training for the California Medi-Cal Peer Specialist Certification. Prepares participants for peer counseling roles through in-person, experiential classroom trainings that cover all core competencies for peer-based work. Trainings are 12 weeks long, meeting twice a week at San Francisco State University’s Downtown Campus, and offer 3 units of college credit. Course is offered 2x/year in the Spring and Fall. Separate application required.
Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate (PSMHC) - ADVANCED COURSE
Provides additional training, continuing education, professional growth and workforce development opportunities for individuals who are currently providing peer support and/or advocacy in the community. Trainings are in-person, 8 weeks long, meeting twice a week at San Francisco State University’s Downtown Campus, and offer 3 units of college credit. Course is offered 2x/year in the Winter and Summer. Separate application required.
Leadership Academy
Monthly virtual training on Zoom designed to support and educate peer providers working in the community, providing trainings on a variety of topics such as group facilitation, healthy boundaries and self-care, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing, among many others. Trainings take place the 4th Friday of every month, 10am-12pm, and are open to all current and aspiring peer providers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Peer Counseling Internship Program
Hands-on training program for individuals with lived experience to learn and practice peer support skills in the community. Site placements during the paid, up-to-20 hours/week, 9-month-long internship have included the RAMS Peer Wellness Center; group facilitation at treatment centers throughout the behavioral health system of care; clinics and drop-in centers; and many more. The program runs from late-Aug. through late-May and offers a supportive start to a career in peer counseling.
